Organizations

  • Black Action Society (BAS) is dedicated to representing and addressing the needs and concerns of the Black student population at the University of Pittsburgh. Since its inception in 1969, BAS has fostered a positive environment for the development and support of Black students, advocated for the needs of all students, and established a sense of community throughout the campus, the city of Pittsburgh and the western Pennsylvania region.
  • Asian Student Alliance (ASA) is an organization founded on diversity. ASA provides a forum for discussion, expression and representation of Asian, Asian-American and Asian-interested students.
  • Campus Women's Organization (CWO) is a feminist organization dedicated to the fight for equal rights for men and women. Members of CWO believe it is their duty to educate and empower today's men and women to mover toward a non-sexist campus, country and world.

Honoraries

  • Freedom is an honorary student organization that promotes a higher standard of scholastic achievement for African American students. Freedom recognizes and encourages leadership, and establishes meaningful exchange of ideas and concerns between administration and African American students. Contact Freedom by phone at 412-648-7830.
  • Phi Eta Sigma is a national academic honor society for students who have achieved a 3.5 QPA during their freshman year. Programming includes tutoring, as well as social and volunteer activities.
  • Omicron Delta Kappa is a junior/senior leadership honorary recognizing outstanding achievement among undergraduates in the following areas: scholarship athletics, service and religious activities, campus government, journalism, speech and mass media, and the creative and performing arts. Student Governments

  • College of General Studies Student Government (CGSSG) represents the undergraduate student body of the College of General Studies. The government develops programs and services for their constituencies, allocates their student activity fee, and represents their constituencies on various University committees.
  • Graduate Professional Student Organization (GPSA) is the recognized student government for all graduate and professional students. The governing body of GPSA is known as the Assembly, which is comprised of four elected executive officers and representatives of each school's student government organizations.
  • Student Government Board (SGB) represents the undergraduate student body of the College of Arts and Sciences. The government develops programs and services for their constituencies, allocates their student activity fee, and represents their constituencies on various University committees.

Student Media

  • Panther Prints is a colorful record of academic and social life at the University of Pittsburgh given to all graduating students at the end of the spring term. Contact Panther Prints by phone at 412-648-7897.
  • Pitt TV on channel 3 is devoted to promoting student programs and activities through free advertising. PittTV also airs an international film series and other educational and feature films. Check the Pitt TV website for an updated film schedule.
  • The Pitt News, published since 1906, is the student newspaper of the University. Printing 14,000 copies daily, and through its Web site. The Pitt News provides news, sports, opinions, and art and entertainment to its readers. This newspaper has won a gallery of state and national awards over the years and provides career-oriented experience in all aspects of journalism and newspaper publishing.
  • Telefact is a student operated information line that handles all student inquiries. Calls are answered seven days a week from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm during the Fall and Spring terms. Dial 412-624-FACT.
  • WPTS FM, Pittsburgh's Progressive FM, 92.1 WPTS is the University of Pittsburgh's student-run radio station. With an eclectic mix of music, news, sports, and public affairs programming, 92.1 WPTS provides the campus a welcome alternative to commercial radio. In addition to its FM signal, WPTS programming is available via online stream and on Pitt TV Channel 3 on the University cable system.

  • The University of Pittsburgh Association of Chaplaincies (UPAC) provides connections with local religious organizations that serve the University community.
  • Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Pittsburgh is solely responsible for the advisement of the three governing councils: Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and Panhellenic Council (PHC), as well as one multicultural sorority. Student leaders in 21 fraternities and 15 sororities contribute to the development of policies, promotion of educational programming, and coordination of community service efforts.
  • Pitt Program Council provides a wide variety of programming that meets the interests of the student body. The student committees of the Pitt Program Council plan a variety of entertainment and educational activities. Programs include celebrity and political lectures, weekly films, recreational events, the annual Fall Fest and Bigelow Bash street events, annual homecoming activities, and art gallery exhibits.   • The Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) is the hub for student organizations and provides services for all registered student groups—computer accounts, mail, faxes, copies—as well as certification, financial management and program planning assistance.
